Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams star as Max and Annie, whose weekly couples Game Night gets kicked up a notch when Max’s charismatic brother, Brooks (Kyle Chandler), arranges a murder mystery party, complete with fake thugs and faux federal agents. So, when Brooks gets kidnapped, it’s all part of the game…right? But as the six uber-competitive gamers set out to solve the case and win, they begin to discover that neither this “game”— nor Brooks—are what they seem to be. Over the course of one chaotic night, the friends find themselves increasingly in over their heads as each twist leads to another unexpected turn. With no rules, no points, and no idea who all the players are, this could turn out to be the most fun they’ve ever had…or game over.

“ Disobedience” had a strong opening in the box office this weekend and doubles the opening numbers of any film from Bleecker Street according IndieWire. Deadline is reporting the movie posts no #2 thus far in the box office of the limited releases of this year. The movie will be slowly expanding to more theaters the coming week and will officially go nationwide on May 18 in the United States. Be sure to head over to the official website disobedience.movie to find a theater near you.

Fresh from an Oscar win for Best Foreign Language Film for A Fantastic Woman, Sebastián Lelio scored with English-language drama/romance Disobedience, which had the second-best limited bow of 2018 on a per-theater average basis. The Bleecker Street title starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams grossed $241K in five locations, averaging $48,255. (The only better limited debut this year has been Searchlight’s Isle of Dogs, which averaged $60,011 per theater in its March debut and has cumed $27 million to date.)

Bleecker Street said Sunday that Disobedience saw strong LGBT and art house patronage over the weekend in its New York and LA launch, with a wide age range from 20s to 50-pluses. “Sellouts occurred in all houses throughout the weekend, particularly during prime evening shows,” said Bleecker Street’s Jack Foley told Deadline. “Mid-afternoon matinees were near capacity… We are extremely happy with the weekend’s business. I think if we had more seats, frankly, we would have done more business.”

Foley noted that the female-to-male ratio was 70-30% at the Angelika in downtown Manhattan, while at uptown site Lincoln Square it came in closer to 50-50. Disobedience is also Bleecker Street’s biggest platform release ever, just ahead of Eye In the Sky, which opened in five locations in April 2016, grossing $113,803 ($22,761 PTA).

“ Disobedience” is opening in selected theaters – in New York and Los Angeles – in the United States starting today. The movie will expand to more cities the coming weeks and will open nationwide on May 18. To find the release schedule be sure to head over to the official website. Rachel stars in the movie alongside Rachel Weisz and Alessandro Nivola with Sebastián Lelio directing. It’s based on Naomi Alderman’s book with a screenplay by Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz. The movie has been very well received with critics praising the leads performances, be sure to check out our reviews round-up in case you missed it. While we always try to have a – somewhat – neutral stand and not favorite any projects of Rachel and promote them equally we do want to take this opportunity to ask everyone to go and support this movie by seeing it in theaters. It seems a passion project of everyone involved and we think it’s important to show support for smaller independent movies like this. To quote the official twitter account, the movie “asks the audience to question many societal norms” and we think representation on-screen (and off-screen) matters.

“ Disobedience” is getting critical acclaim thus far and currently holds a 91% rating at Rotten Tomatoes (making it officially certified ‘Fresh’) and 75 Meta Critics Score. Rachel’s performance especially gets praise with critics calling her performance a “ stand-out” and “ powerhouse“. We will round-up the reviews in this post and we will – as always – focus on the Rachel-centered excerpts. And in case you missed it we rounded-up the reviews after the TIFF premiere in our previous post.

“It’s astounding performances, and complex themes flirt with the dangers and beauty of love in a compassionate, lucid manner. Unsure what sauce Rachel McAdams has been sipping since her Oscar nomination for “Spotlight” in 2015 but the actress had found her hinted mojo that we saw when she emerged onto the scene fourteen years ago with “The Notebook” and “Mean Girls.” She taps into the universal anxieties regarding an examination of one’s self while still simmering in a stunning atmosphere that features eye-catching visuals. McAdams may very well be on her way to her second Oscar nomination, and it wouldn’t be underserved. Esti is heartened and reserved but explores ranges that are both delicate and voluptuous.”

“McAdams, for her part, is quietly devastating as a wife trying to measure what would be lost if she broke free to follow her heart. Weisz and McAdams, two extraordinary actresses at the top of their game, cut so deep into their characters you can almost feel their nerve endings.”

The 17th Annual Tribeca Film Festival unveiled it’s line-up and “ Disobedience” is part of their line-up. The screening will be the premiere screening for the United States. The movie is part of the Spotlight Narrative line-up. The festival runs from April 18–29 and ticket packages are on sale now. For more information be sure to head over to the official website.

The Spotlight Narrative section is a launching pad for exciting new independent premieres with a focus on marquee filmmakers and performers. Past films from this section include Julie Delpy’s 2 Days in Paris (2007), Jeff Nichols’ Shotgun Stories (2007), Steven Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience (2009), Sarah Adina Smith’s Buster’s Mal Heart (2017), and Azazel Jacobs’ The Lovers (2017).
