Sugar’s web page upper left chest pain

This is Sugar. She was dumped by her owners like this. They said she had been like this for TWO WEEKS! They didn’t know why and didn’t want to deal with it! Her front legs are rigid. They stick straight behind her and she cannot use them. Her neck is very stiff as well and arched oddly to one side. She is also extremely skinny. She doesn’t appear to be in pain at the moment and despite all of this, she sweetly wags her tail…she is only two years old!!!

We’re seeking sponsors for Sugar’s care. All Texas Dachshund Rescue is taking care of her veterinary needs and what Sugar will need will be costly, so if you are able to donate any amount, large or small, it would be greatly appreciated. Go to the front page of this site to the Donate button to help Sugar… Thank you so much in advance for caring…

Update on Sugar’s vet visit 3.16.18: Posting pictures below of Sugar at La Cantara vet clinic in San Antonio. They use conventional treatment as well as acupuncture and physical therapy. Super struggled for weeks propelling her body forward using her back legs only. She struggled to eat, to drink water and to just stay alive! She didn’t give up and we won’t either!! This baby has a will to live and deserves a life with more quality! Thank you to everyone for being generous enough to make donations. Please keep them coming for Sugar…

It will take some work to figure out the cause of Sugar’s problems. We ordered bloodwork to help us determine if this is something lik e a tick-born disease or something leftover from a case of distemper or some other neurological issue. In the meantime she gets antibiotics and muscle relaxers…and of course massages and kisses and chef prepared meals! For dinner she had some top notch canned food, grilled swordfish and French cheese!

Sugar Report 3.19.18: Sugar is feeling rather spunky this morning. She did her business and had breakfast and now she needs to chill a bit. If she could, she would climb out of that bed and drag herself around which would not be good. She had sores from her previous life that she got doing that outside…

3.20.18: This is happy pup! You can’t tell from these videos but her front legs are becoming less stiff. Got some test results back. She has more than one issue but we know she is positive for Rocky Mountain Fever!!!!! The treatment is antibiotics which she already taking. Yikes.

3.20.18 Evening update: Now Sugar is still on the doxycycline to treat the Rocky Mountain Fever for which she tested positive. The vet believes there are other things going on and we are awaiting more test results. Rocky Mountain Fever has been starting to show up in the Rio Grande Valley. We don’t know if this caused the paralysis. That would be possible but uncommon. I hope we get the rest of the picture soon. Sugar chilled with the family unit after a big dinner. She has taken to “Creature” a 3-pound male Chi mix.

3.24.18 Sugar Diagnosis: Test results received today for Sugar! Negative for Lyme disease. Toxoplasmosis and ehrlichia. The vet thinks she has some neurological damage from distemper. She wants to keep her antibiotics, do some other tests and start acupuncture.
