Veterans find free dental care at cvtc clinic local chippewa.com food after tooth extraction

Bonnie Mercer of Durand brought her father, Gerald Johnson, Sr., an Army veteran, and her brother, Gerald Jr., a Navy veteran, to the clinic. “Two years ago I was trying to get some dental care for my dad and we didn’t have insurance, so I called the CVTC Dental Clinic and found about Give Vets a Smile day,” Mercer said. “I said ‘sign us up!’”

“I haven’t been to a dentist in a long time,” said Steve Dahl of Chippewa Falls, a 1973-79 Air Force veteran. “I don’t have dental insurance and I lost my job, so I don’t have a lot of money. I’ve got a loose tooth in the back that feels like it’s ready to fall out.”

For the second year, CVTC Respiratory Care students also volunteered. “They’re facilitating getting patients into the clinic, checking vital signs and giving free COPD education with materials from the COPD Foundation,” said Don Raymond, Respiratory Therapy program director.

He added that the community service work also benefits the students, who gain experience in patient interaction.

This is a wonderful contribution by an individual dentist. However, all Dentists should be embarrassed that they have created a monopoly that excludes veterans, seniors and poor people from getting needed dental care every day of the year, when its needed and before teeth get so rotted they have to be pulled. 80% of dentists refuse Medicaid patients, organized dentistry lobbied to have dental excluded from Medicare and Veteran Health Care excludes most dental needs.

Dental Therapists (DTs) can fill the gap. But organized dentistry, with its pockets full of corporate cash, lobbies long and hard against legalizing DTs in every state that considers them. They prefer to hold onto their lucrative monopoly, instead – no matter how many Americans are suffering.

Dentists need to be mandated to treat more low income folks all year long. We know dentists love mandates because they are behind every fluoridation mandate in this country. Fluoridation gives the illusion they care about the low-incmed folks who are welcomed in their dental chairs all year long. Dentists didn’t do it on their own. Our government subsidizes dental schools, tuitions, gives out loads of cash to study fluoride’s effects to the teeth (but not the body) and more. It’s time for dentists to give back since they’ve received welfare for the rich while taxpayers are suffering.
